Shillong to Cherrapunji

The road trip from Shillong to Cherrapunji (locally known as Sohra) is arguably one of the most mesmerizing drives in all of India. As you leave the bustling streets of Shillong behind, the highway opens up into sweeping curves, dramatic gorges, and thick, rolling clouds that spill directly onto the asphalt.

The Route & Road Conditions

You will be riding on National Highway 206 (NH206). The road conditions are generally excellent—a well-paved, two-lane highway for the vast majority of the stretch. However, because you are descending through the hills, expect continuous hairpin bends and steep switchbacks.

Pro Tip: Due to the high altitude, the weather can change in minutes. You might start in bright sunshine in Shillong and hit a dense wall of fog and heavy rain 20 kilometers down the road. Always pack rain gear, even in the dry season.

Must-Stop Places on the Way

Do not rush this drive. The journey is just as spectacular as the destination. We recommend starting early (around 7:30 AM) and making these stops:

• Elephant Falls: Located just 12 km outside Shillong, this multi-tiered waterfall is a great quick stop to stretch your legs before hitting the main highway.
• Mawkdok Dympep Valley View Point: About halfway to Sohra, a bridge crosses a massive, plunging gorge. Stop here for Maggi, hot tea, and an incredible panoramic photo op.
• Wakidok (Zip-lining): For the adrenaline junkies, you can pull over and zip-line straight across the Mawkdok valley.

Choosing the Right Vehicle

Because of the steep ascents on your return journey and the unpredictable weather, you need a machine that can handle torque and traction.

For Bikers

The Royal Enfield Himalayan is the undisputed king of this route. The low-end torque pulls you effortlessly out of steep hairpin corners, and its weight keeps the bike stable when strong crosswinds hit the valley ridges. If you prefer sticking strictly to the highway, the Hunter 350 is a phenomenally fun corner-carver.

For Families

If you want to keep your family dry and comfortable when the Sohra rain hits, the Maruti Ertiga or Fronx are perfect. They offer excellent climate control and defoggers to maintain visibility when the clouds roll in.
